How to Play
A set of tiles on the board lights up for a moment, then goes dark. Once the tiles are dark, tap or click every tile that was lit โ get them all right and you move up a level. Level 1 starts on a 3x3 board with 3 tiles to remember; each level after that adds one more tile, and the board automatically grows (up to 7x7) to keep the lit tiles from crowding more than about a third of the grid. The preview also gets a little shorter as you climb, from about 1.2 seconds on level 1 down to a 0.7-second floor at higher levels, so later rounds ask you to memorize more in less time. You have 3 lives โ tap a tile that wasn't lit and you lose one, and the same level restarts with a brand-new pattern. Run out of lives and the game ends; your score is the level you reached.
Tips
- Group the lit tiles into a shape or a rough path in your head instead of memorizing coordinates one by one โ a triangle or a zig-zag is easier to hold onto than three separate positions.
- The board only grows past 3x3 once the tile count needs it, so early levels reuse the same small grid โ get comfortable with the corners and center before the board expands under you.
- A wrong tap doesn't end your run, it just costs a life and reshuffles the same level โ use the extra attempts to slow down rather than guessing under pressure.
- The preview time shrinks every level down to a 0.7-second floor, so once you're memorizing 7-8 tiles in under a second, speed-reading the pattern as one whole shape matters more than tracking tiles individually.
About This Visual Memory Test
This is a free online visual memory test in the spirit of the classic grid-recall games used to gauge short-term spatial memory: watch a pattern, then reproduce it from memory on a growing board. Most players find the game comfortable through the 3x3 and 4x4 boards, then start losing lives once the grid expands past 5x5 and the preview window drops under a second โ that's the point where holding the whole pattern in your head, rather than each tile individually, starts to matter.
Your best level is saved locally in your browser, so you can come back and try to beat it. There's no time limit on your turn to tap โ only the preview is timed โ so take the extra time you're given to double-check the pattern before you commit to your first tap.
