How to Play
Choose a time limit of 15, 30, or 60 seconds, then just start typing — the clock only starts counting on your very first keystroke, not when the page loads. Type each highlighted word exactly as shown and press the space bar to submit it and move to the next one; a word only counts as correct if what you typed matches it exactly, letter for letter. Backspace works, but only within the word you're currently typing — once you've moved on with a space, that word is locked in. On mobile, tap the word box to bring up your keyboard.
How WPM Is Calculated
Words per minute isn't counted by literal dictionary words — it uses the standard typing-test formula where every 5 correctly typed characters count as one "word." Your WPM is (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed, so typing 300 correct characters in 60 seconds is exactly 60 WPM. Raw WPM uses the same formula but counts every character you typed, right or wrong, so it shows your raw finger speed before accuracy is factored in. Accuracy is the percentage of all your keystrokes that were correct at the moment you typed them — backspacing a mistake removes it from view, but it still counts against your accuracy.
Tips
- Accuracy matters more than raw speed — a single typo throws out an entire word's worth of characters from your WPM, so a slower, clean run almost always beats a fast, sloppy one.
- Watch the caret, not your fingers — the character coloring (green for correct, red for wrong) gives you instant feedback without needing to look down at the keyboard.
- The word list is drawn from the ~200 most common English words, so building rhythm on short, frequent words like "the," "and," and "that" pays off more than memorizing rare ones.
- If the last few seconds catch you mid-word, finish it if you can — an incomplete word at the very end simply isn't counted, correct or not.
About This Typing Test
This is a free online typing speed test built around the same measurements used by well-known typing sites: words per minute (WPM), raw WPM, and accuracy, calculated with the standard 5-characters-per-word convention. Pick 15 seconds for a quick burst or 60 seconds for a fuller read on your typing speed — your best WPM is saved locally for each time mode, so you can track improvement over repeated attempts.
The word stream is shuffled fresh from a pool of common English words every run, words scroll smoothly as you type, and the results screen breaks down your WPM, accuracy, raw WPM, and a count of correct versus incorrect characters so you can see exactly where your speed is coming from.
