Minesweeper

How to Play

The board is full of hidden mines. Tap a tile to open it โ€” if it's a mine, the game ends and every mine is revealed. If it's safe, it shows a number from 0 to 8, and that number tells you exactly how many mines are hiding in the 8 tiles touching it. A tile that shows nothing (0) means none of its neighbors are mines, so the game automatically opens all of them for you, often clearing a whole region in one tap. Your very first tap of a new game is always guaranteed to be safe and always opens a 0-tile, so you never lose on the opening move. Flag any tile you suspect hides a mine โ€” right-click on desktop, or press and hold on mobile (there's also a Flag Mode toggle in the bar above the board for one-tap flagging on touch screens). Once a numbered tile has exactly as many flags around it as its number says, tap that number again to instantly open all of its remaining unflagged neighbors โ€” this move is called a "chord," and it's the single biggest speed boost once you get used to it. Open every tile that isn't a mine to win; flags are just a memory aid and aren't required to win. Switch between Easy (9x9, 10 mines), Medium (16x16, 40 mines), and Hard (20x20, 80 mines) at any time from the difficulty bar.

About This Minesweeper

This is a free online version of the classic Minesweeper logic puzzle, built for both mouse and touch play. Instead of the traditional 16x30 Expert board, Hard uses a 20x20 grid with a similar mine density (about 20%) โ€” wide rectangular boards get uncomfortably cramped on phone screens, and a square grid stays playable at any size. Every board is generated fresh, and the first tile you open is never a mine and always starts a clear opening, so no run ends before it begins.

Your fastest clear time is saved locally in your browser for each difficulty separately, so switching difficulties won't overwrite your Easy record with a Medium one. There's no move limit and no penalty for taking your time โ€” only your best clear time is tracked, so you can play carefully on your first pass and push for speed once you know the board mechanics well.
